The More You Know – Notes from the Film Office

Marketing Yourself

Are you a film industry professional looking to market yourself or your company? There are a couple of things you can do.

The Arizona Production Association publishes a manual every year listing crew and companies related to the film industry located in Arizona. This manual is distributed to production companies and producers looking to film in Arizona and is promoted by the Phoenix Film Office, the Arizona Film Office and other film offices around the state. The same manual is also available on-line and you may visit it to find out current rates to list yourself. The site is: www.azproduction.com

The Phoenix Film Office also has a production manual that is only available on-line. There is no cost to be listed with us, but we limit the people in our manual to those with Greater Phoenix mailing addresses (Greater Phoenix includes, but is not limited to, areas such as Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale, Gilbert, Cave Creek, Buckeye, Apache Junction, Maricopa, etc.). To view the manual, click on “Production Manual” in the left navigational bar. If you wish to list yourself, simply follow the appropriate link below and fill out the information and your listing will be up in about a week! You may only be listed three times.

The Phoenix Film Office also asks that you update your listing with us as events in your life change (address, email, phone numbers or you are no longer working in the film industry).

For Crew (individual freelance people), go to: http://copwww05.phoenix.gov/forms/film/ProductionPersonnelListing.aspx

For Production Services (companies that offer a service such as hotels or equipment houses), go to:

A Message from the President of the Arizona Film and Media Coalition

To the Arizona film community,

As we get further into the summer and further removed from the disappointing campaign to change and extend the Arizona film tax incentive program, I thought I should provide an update on what has been happening and what appears to be the course of action before us.

While enjoying cooler climates on my vacation this summer, I continued to work with various groups and Senators to lay the groundwork for the next chapter in the Arizona film incentive saga. There have been numerous meetings, conference calls and open forums to build on and expand the support and progress we made last spring.
As a result, we will have a draft of a new Bill ready for review the first week of September. It is modeled on SB 1409, the Bill from the last session with changes and improvements.
It is also a consensus bill in that the components were approved after a long series of meetings and compromises by the various groups working to enact new motion picture tax incentives. I know from being at nearly every meeting from November of last year through today that the new bill's components are a vast improvement from the existing law.

That said, no agreement, bill or law that is a compromise could incorporate the views or goals of the various groups represented in their entirety. This bill has pieces of each group's wants and needs. The draft bill that will be available next week is a starting point. It may change in many ways in the coming months and during the next legislative session.

Some of the items included are: Making the program a rebate instead of a tax credit, putting TV series at the front of the line after their first year of production, expanding the expenses that qualify and putting a time line and process in place for submitting paperwork after filming has been completed.

These are just some of the changes. I encourage you to look at the AFMC web site in the coming weeks for a posting of the draft bill.

The AFMC is having elections in September, and that means someone else will be leading the charge for the next year. It will be hard to not be at the forefront of this fight. I have always fought for the best interests of the Arizona film community and you, the members of that community.

Thank you for the support you have shown to the AFMC and all you have done to help us make Arizona the best filming destination it can be.

Sincerely,
Michael McGinn
President AFMC

PFS Screening: The Desert of Forbidden Art

When: Friday, August 20th
Time: 7:30PM
Where: Phoenix Art Museum
1625 North Central Avenue
Phoenix, AZ 85004
602.257.1222
www.phxart.org

The Phoenix Film Society presents a screening of the The Desert of Forbidden Art at the Phoenix Art Museum.

Featuring narration and voices by Ben Kingsley, Sally Field and Ed Asner

Synopsis:
How does art survive in a time of oppression? During the Soviet rule, artists who stay true to their vision are executed, sent to
mental hospitals or Gulags. Their plight inspires young Igor Savitsky.
He pretends to buy state-approved art but instead daringly
rescues 40,000 forbidden fellow artist's works and creates a museum
in the desert of Uzbekistan, far from the watchful eyes of the KGB.
Though a penniless artist himself, he cajoles the cash to pay for the
art from the same authorities who are banning it. Savitsky amasses
an eclectic mix of Russian Avant-Garde art. But his greatest discovery
is an unknown school of artists who settle in Uzbekistan after the
Russian revolution of 1917, encountering a unique Islamic culture, as
exotic to them as Tahiti was for Gauguin. They develop a startlingly
original style, fusing European modernism with centuries-old Eastern traditions.

Ben Kingsley, Sally Field and Ed Asner voice the
diaries and letters of Savitsky and the artists. Intercut with recollections of the artists' children and rare archival footage, the film takes us on a dramatic journey of sacrifice for the sake of creative freedom.

Tickets: Tickets for this event are free for IFP Phoenix and
Phoenix Film Society members. You must go to the Brown Paper
Ticket link to reserve tickets for you and a guest.

Screening - "The Dry Land"

Showing August 13th at the Harkins Shea 14!

Winner: Target Best Narrative Film Award at the Dallas Int. Film Festival
Winner: Best International Feature Award at the 64th Edinburgh Int. Film Festival

James (Ryan O’Nan) returns from Iraq to face a new battle—reintegrating into his small-town life in Texas. His wife (America Ferrera), his mother (Melissa Leo), and his friend (Jason Ritter) provide support, but they can’t fully understand the pain and suffering he feels since his tour of duty ended. Lonely, James reconnects with an army buddy (Wilmer Valderrama), who provides him with compassion and camaraderie during his battle to process his experiences in Iraq. But their reunion also exposes the different ways that war affects people—at least on the surface. This moving, taut story of redemption and reconstruction extends beyond a post-traumatic-stress-disorder narrative. O’Nan is heartbreaking as he explores the depths of his internal struggle; Ferrera fearlessly tackles her role of a young wife in turmoil. The Dry Land is about one man’s fight within his own terrain—his country, home, and mind—and his journey to rebuild what he’s lost.  The film is rated R.
